How to prune trees before winter

Owners should take care of fruit trees in the fall to get juicy and large fruits next year. First of all, you need to know how to properly cut off damaged and diseased branches to increase productivity.

OBOZ.UA has collected effective tips to help you do this. Pears complete the fruiting period in the fall, so they need to be prepared for wintering.

Pruning is an important process of caring for fruit trees. It affects the formation of the crown, enhances fruiting, improves fruit quality, and helps to avoid pests and diseases.

A pear can be pruned immediately after harvest and before the first frost. At this time, the tree is dormant and pruning will not harm it. Prepare secateurs as the tool must be sharp and clean so as not to transfer diseases from other plants.

In the first year of a pear's life, you need to shorten its trunk and remove vertical shoots so that the tree grows upward. Cut the side branches to the first bud. Inspect the tree and remove diseased and dry shoots.

In the second year of growth, cut off the top by 20-25 centimeters and shorten the side branches by 6-8 centimeters. Remove vertical branches so that they do not interfere with sunlight reaching the entire tree. After pruning, treat the wounds with garden wax or other means to prevent infection.

In the third year of the pear's life, continue to shorten the top and side branches. Remove all crooked, upright, and dried shoots. It is also worth monitoring how the pear grows and, if necessary, removing young shoots that disturb the shape of the crown.
