How to care for orchids

An orchid is an exquisite houseplant that will become a real decoration of your home and will perfectly match any interior. However, this flower is so demanding that it is often avoided.

Orchid care is indeed a real science. Plants do not tolerate high temperatures, die from drafts, and sometimes even refuse to bloom despite all efforts and fertilizers. Express shared a simple watering method that revives the plant.

When the flowers finally fade, it is tempting to throw away the houseplant, but a simple trick will help revive the orchid and ensure long-lasting flowering.

A user shared an interesting life hack that made the flower "bloom like crazy" on Gardening UK's Facebook page.

Posting a photo of her blooming orchid, Katherine Reeder wrote, "My mom gave me this orchid. It had one blue flower, which soon wilted, so at first I thought it was over."

However, the woman did not lose her enthusiasm. She decided to try a somewhat unusual method of watering. All she had to do was put an ice cube on the bottom of the saucer once a week.

Some gardening experts say that ice cubes are effective for watering orchids because they promote high-quality moisture. According to statistics, the most common cause of orchid decay is improper watering. Ice cubes are the best practice for those who have a habit of over-watering indoor plants.

The idea is that when the ice cubes melt slowly, they give the substrate and roots enough time to absorb the water. This way, the orchid gets exactly the amount of moisture it needs.

Orchid experts at Just Add Ice support this method, "If you have a small orchid, use two cubes, and for mini-orchids, one is enough."

It may seem that low temperatures can harm the roots and leaves. However, experts from Love Orchids say, "Since orchids are native to the rainforest, where they like hot and humid weather, the reasons for concern seem reasonable. But we know from research and our own experience that the ice cube method is a safe way to water orchids."

Scientists from the Ohio State University and the University of Georgia conducted a study: half of the orchids were watered with water at room temperature, the other half with ice cubes.

The orchids were evaluated for four to six months, and the results showed that the orchids watered with ice cubes had the same life expectancy as orchids watered with room-temperature water. Therefore, watering orchids with ice cubes is as effective as traditional watering methods.
