How to wash clothes to make them look like new: a clever trick

Starching clothes takes some time, but the result is worth it

When we buy clothes, we want them to look like new for as long as possible. This is especially true for business casual clothes, as they need to maintain their appearance for an extended period, and that can be challenging because blouses and shirts need frequent washing.

Experts suggest a simple technique, reminiscent of what our grandmothers used to do, to help maintain the appearance of business shirts. It involves using starch on your garments. Starching helps preserve the fabric's structure and prevents excessive wrinkling. OBOZREVATEL explains how to starch your clothes correctly.

While today you can find starch spray in stores, it is less effective than a complete fabric treatment. To make your shirt look brand new, you'll need to immerse it fully in the starch solution. Yes, it takes a bit more time, but the results are worth it.

You can prepare a starch solution using rice flour. Here's what you'll need:

  • Fine rice flour
  • Cold water
  • A large bowl
  • A saucepan
  • Two buckets

To process one shirt, you'll need just one teaspoon of rice flour and half a cup of cold water. For five shirts, you'll require five teaspoons of rice flour and 2.5 cups of cold water.

Start by placing the rice flour in a large bowl, covering it with cold water, and stirring thoroughly to eliminate any lumps. Let the mixture sit for five minutes, then transfer it to a saucepan and heat it for ten minutes over low heat, stirring constantly until it thickens.

Prepare two buckets, one filled with enough cold water to submerge all the shirts you want to treat and the other empty. Slowly pour the prepared starch into the bucket with cold water, stirring well to ensure complete dissolution.

Have the second empty bucket ready. Dip the shirts into the starch solution, ensuring they soak entirely. Then transfer them to the empty bucket. If any starch solution remains in the first bucket, pour it over the clothes and let them soak for another ten minutes.

Afterward, straighten the shirts as much as possible and hang them to air dry. Once they are dry, lightly sprinkle them with water and wait for the fabric to absorb it entirely. Finally, use a steam iron to press the items. They should appear as good as new.
