How to whiten yellowed pillows

Pillows should be cleaned regularly. According to studies, bacteria and fungal spores that accumulate in pillows can cause health problems, from acne and allergic reactions to respiratory diseases.

Over time, unpleasant yellow spots appear on the surface. Express has learned how to whiten old pillows quickly and effectively.

How to whiten pillows

An important note: this method cannot be used for down (feather) pillows. The life hack will not work on pillows made of foam with a "memory effect".

First of all, check the care label to see if the pillows are machine washable. It may seem like a daunting task to clean a yellowed fabric, but the problem can be solved without the use of harsh chemicals.

The secret is to use white vinegar. Acidic components have bleaching and disinfecting properties.

  • Step 1. Put the pillow in the washing machine. Pour 1 cup of white distilled vinegar into the fabric softener compartment.
  • Step 2. Pour ½ cup of baking soda into the drum of the washing machine.
  • Step 3. Pour the laundry detergent into the main compartment.

Baking soda helps to neutralize any odors and helps to soften the water.

Next, wash the pillows according to the instructions on the labels.

How often do you need to wash your pillows?

Experts estimate that we spend an average of one-third of our lives in bed, so the pillow naturally becomes a "home" for dead skin cells, sweat, dust, and various bacteria.

You should wash your pillow at least every three months. It is better to use a mild laundry detergent and turn on an additional spin cycle so that excess moisture does not lead to mold growth.
