How to keep your apartment warm

Amid the war, rising prices and enemy shelling, Ukrainians are looking for ways to keep their homes warm. If the occupiers resume massive shelling of critical infrastructure, it will probably be impossible to avoid power and heat outages.

According to the expert, using a simple "trick" with curtains can reduce bills by up to 30%. The details were reported by the Express.

Proper window arrangement can help reduce energy consumption as heat loss through windows accounts for approximately 25-30% of the energy used in our homes. This was emphasized by Helen O'Connor, manager of Blinds & Curtains.

She said, "During the winter months, we have an average of six to eight hours of daylight, which means we should be closing our curtains and blinds for the other 18 hours of the day."

If you are not going to be home during the day, close the curtains as this will help keep the heat in during the day when you get home. According to Safe Style Windows, about 18% of the total heat in a home is lost through windows. This is caused by radiation through the glass and convection passing through the window frame.

It is better to choose thermal curtains because they have a thick lining that retains more heat than thin materials. Roman blinds are a great option for protection from cold wind.

"Curtains that touch the floor are much more likely to retain heat in the house. The curtains should be wider than the window frame," Helen added.

Andy Kerr, founder of Boxt, added, "The ideal room temperature in winter is between 18°C and 20°C.

The following tips can also help against drafts:

  • seals should be put in the frames;
  • glass at the joints with the frames should be treated with silicone sealant;
  • fill the gaps in the window sills with polyurethane foam;
  • a heat-saving film can be glued to the glass.
