How to get rid of mustiness in towels and bathroom mats: expert tips

Alina MilsentLife
How often should you wash mats and towels

Frequently washing rugs and towels can be a cumbersome task, especially for larger families. Nevertheless, regular washing of rugs is crucial to prevent moisture and mold buildup.

Towels and bathroom mats can serve as an ideal breeding ground for bacteria and germs, making regular cleaning essential for maintaining good hygiene, as highlighted by the Express.

Experts recommend changing bathroom mats every two years.

"Towels often develop a musty odor due to the growth of mold. Therefore, it's crucial to ensure thorough drying after washing," explained Olivia Young, a chemist and cleaning expert at Astonish.

Adequate space for air circulation and uniform drying is necessary.

However, if an unpleasant odor does arise, experts suggest some straightforward life hacks.

Primarily, wash towels or rugs at a high temperature using white vinegar. Activate the intensive washing mode on your washing machine and choose a temperature of at least 40 °C. Alongside vinegar, include detergent and rinse aid.

To thwart mold, Young advises washing the mats separately from other items.

Following washing, ensure that mats and towels are placed on a radiator or in fresh air until completely dry.

For optimum cleanliness, bathroom rugs are ideally washed every three to seven days.
