How often you should wash body and face towels: the perfect option

How bad is it to use a towel over and over again? The fluffy fabric is in constant contact with our body and collects everything on its surface, and then may return it back in increased quantities because microorganisms have the ability to multiply on the fabric.

The Health turned to hygiene experts to explain how often towels should be changed to protect yourself from the spread of infections. They also gave some related tips.

Dead cells, fat particles, and some bodily secretions get on the towel fabric and, together with moisture, become food for bacteria and fungi. That's why experts recommend separating body, face, and hand towels to minimize the spread of microorganisms.

How often towels should be washed

There is no unanimous opinion on this matter, but all options can be summarized by the word "often." Usually, it is recommended to wash bath towels after 2-3 uses. Face and hand towels even more often.

Towels of those who have skin infections or SARS should be washed as often as possible. In some cases, after each use.

A sign that it is definitely time to wash the towel is the appearance of a subtle odor on it. It signals the beginning of the growth of microorganisms. It's also time to wash if the textile has become stiff and has stopped absorbing moisture properly. If the towel has stopped performing its function properly even after washing, it should be thrown away and replaced with a new one.

How to dry towels properly

In fact, drying towels - between uses and after washing - is no less important than cleaning them. After all, it is on a damp towel that microorganisms multiply. Dry textiles are much safer in this regard.

Thus, used wet towels should be dried outside the bathroom, where the humidity level is constantly high. Alternatively, you can hang them on the door from the outside: on hooks or slats. If the towel remains damp to the touch for a long time after a shower, it should be replaced with a clean one and washed.
