Former ISIS fighters in Russia are sent as agents to Ukraine

For years, the Russian FSB has been recruiting people to become agents in Ukraine. For example, former Syrian fighters often became Russian spies and were offered reduced prison terms for their cooperation.

This was reported by the Meduza newspaper. It is known that in January 2023, Ukraine exposed more than 600 Russian agents, but the FSB of Russia continues to send its spies, not only to Ukraine, but also to the U.S. border.

For example, former ISIS militant Baurzhan Kultanov told his story of how he was recruited to become an FSB agent. According to him, after his deportation he was facing 20 years in prison, but the Russian security services offered him cooperation.

"Well, that's twenty. But if you cooperate, we'll make it a lower sentence," Kultanov said.

After his agreement, the case was tried in a special order and Kultanov was given only four years and four months. His cooperation with the FSB began in prison, where Kultanov gave false testimony and appeared on television. Often the special services of the Russian Federation showed Kultanov pictures of people he did not know, where he was supposed to "recognize" the fighters. Before leaving the colony, the FSB concluded a cooperation contract with Kultanov, gave him a new name, and sent him to Ukraine.

Thus, in 2019, they began preparing him to join "Chechen groups and Tatar battalions that want to fight for the AFU," the former fighter said. The FSB wanted to know "full information" about the supplies and personnel of the formations. FSB officials believed that eventually the former fighter would even be able to "reach the Ukrainian special services."

Russian agents were instructed to gather any information related to Ukraine. In particular, how to get to the front through Turkey, who ferries people to the volunteer battalions, what the local Ukrainians say.

The publication also reports on another attempt by the FSB to recruit a former fighter. Karim, a Dagestani, said that he also fought in ISIS and served time upon his return home. He said that after he was freed, the Russian special services began to hunt for him too.

According to Karim, the FSB is constantly interested in Russians who go to "help fight" Ukrainian troops.

As a reminder, it was previously reported that the CIA had launched a new campaign to recruit Russian spies. Yes, they posted a video for Russians telling them how to contact the U.S. Intelligence Agency anonymously and securely.
