American figure skater Ilya Malinin successfully performed a quadruple axel in the free skate programme at the World Championships. At the championships held in Saitama, Japan, the 18-year-old ethnic Uzbek became the first skater in history to complete 4.5 turns cleanly on the mudnail and avoid falling during the landing.
Taking this axel into account, Ilya performed two quadruple jumps in the short programme and six in the free skate.
The judges scored this jump at 12.86 points (base score of 12.5 + 0.36 points for execution). In total, Malinin received 188.06 for his free skate, eventually taking third place.
Japanese athlete Shoma Uno won the gold medal. Yunghwan Cha from South Korea came second.
Figure skating. World Championships. Men (short + performance programme)
- Shoma Uno (Japan) - 301.14
- Yunghwan Cha (Republic of Korea) - 296.03
- Ilya Malinin (USA) - 288.44
Commenting on his success, Malinin said he was proud of the scores he received for the quadruple axel.
"But yes, looking back, maybe all this risk was not worth it. And obviously, I need to work on my second grade. The problem is that after difficult jumps, it's not very easy to switch to working with the audience right away," the skater said.
