Turkey is a popular vacation destination among Ukrainians. Beginning tourists usually choose this destination for their foreign travels, but there are challenges and pitfalls waiting for many people there.

Turkish merchants have invented different ways to lure buyers to spend as much money as possible. OBOZREVATEL tells about schemes, how sellers in Turkey divorce travelers.

  • Work round the clock

Stores in resorts work until midnight or even until morning in the tourist season. Unpopular goods are usually bought in the evening, when tourists are in the mood to spend money after drinking alcohol. Vendors attract customers and they won't be able to leave the store without a purchase.

  • Invitation at the entrance

In Turkish markets, at the entrance, vendors invite tourists to visit their store. The vendors don't wait for them to decide to come in on their own. They start a friendly conversation and give compliments to attract customers.

  • Talking to customers

At the entrance to the store, sellers do not ask: "How can I help you?", but ask whether it is the tourist's first time in Turkey, how many days of vacation in the resort and in what hotel, as well as where he came from. With these questions they assess the level of knowledge about local prices and assortment, as well as financial possibilities.

After that, the salesperson's main task is to gain trust and emotionally hook the traveler. Turks compliment, offer discounts and give gifts.

  • Free treats

If the tourist is going to leave without a purchase, sellers offer to sit on the couch, drink tea. If a big purchase is at stake - Turkish coffee with lukum is offered. In Turkish culture, this means hospitality and willingness to trade.

  • Bargaining tactics

Tourists are often reluctant to bargain so as not to give up "beggars". In Turkish markets you will never see price tags, because sellers come up with the price themselves, assessing the client. You should bargain and "knock down" the price by at least half.

If the goods are inexpensive, sellers will agree to drop the price tag after a tea party. When buying expensive goods, sellers involve a "store director" who calculates the possible discount with a calculator. If you are not satisfied with the price, leave. In a few seconds you will be caught up by a messenger with the news that the "director of the factory" is ready to agree to your price.
