Bulgaria names conditions for MiG-29 transfer to Ukraine: they want a "trilateral agreement"
Bulgaria's Defence Ministry said it is discussing the possibility of providing Ukraine, which is fighting a full-scale Russian invasion, with MiG-29 aircraft. However, as stated, this will only be possible "without losing our own capabilities".
This was written on the official website of the country's defence ministry. It is noted that negotiations with Kyiv on the free transfer of the aircraft were not held.
The Ministry of Defence announced the possible implementation of so-called trilateral agreements. The point is that instead of MiG-29s, which can be transferred to Ukraine, Bulgaria wants to receive more modern fighters from its allies. In addition, the ministry noted that there is no question of a free transfer of equipment.
The conditions were explained by the fact that the decision to transfer MiGs to the Ukrainian Armed Forces "would lead to a shortage of capabilities, which is contrary to the Constitution of the Republic of Bulgaria and the Law on Defence and the Armed Forces of Bulgaria".
"The Ministry of Defence has been consistently negotiating the possibility of implementing so-called trilateral agreements to replace some of the existing weapons with compatible ones from allied countries, preventing the loss of capabilities," the press service said.
Earlier it became known that Bulgaria would not join the EU plan to purchase ammunition for Ukraine. The country's Defence Minister Dimitri Stoyanov said that Sofia does not have stocks of 155mm ammunition, which are mentioned in the joint procurement plan, because it does not use them.
According to the official, Bulgaria simply has nowhere to get such ammunition.
EURACTIV Bulgaria previously wrote that over the past two years, Bulgaria has transferred more than $1 billion worth of weapons to Ukraine. There was no direct agreement on military assistance between Kyiv and Sofia - the transfer was carried out through intermediary states.
As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, Slovakia approved the transfer of MiG-29 fighters and Kub air defence systems to Ukraine. The government decided to transfer the equipment free of charge in accordance with the Constitution of the Slovak Republic.
Polish President Andrzej Duda said that his country had already sent four MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine as part of military aid. Kyiv will soon receive four more such aircraft.
