Why Luxembourg has not participated in Eurovision for 30 years and what is known about TALI, which will represent the country for the first time since 1993

Last May, Luxembourg officially announced its return to the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 to be held in Malmö, Sweden. The Grand Duchy last participated in the song contest in 1993.

Interestingly, the country is considered to be one of the most successful participants, as it has 5 victories in its arsenal. After 40 years since the last one, Luxembourg is ready to compete for the first place at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024.

"We are delighted to welcome Luxembourg back to the Eurovision Song Contest after 30 years. The country has one of the most successful records in the contest with 5 wins in the first three decades of the contest alone. We are looking forward to working with RTL on their return to the world's biggest live music event in 2024," said Martin Osterdal, Executive Supervisor of the Song Contest.

Why Luxembourg has not participated in Eurovision for over 30 years

Luxembourg was one of the countries participating in the very first Eurovision Song Contest in 1956. In 1972 and 1973, the country won the gold medal twice. Despite the success and numerous victories (only Ireland and Sweden have more), the Grand Duchy decided not to participate in Eurovision after 1993. The reason was a series of unsuccessful performances in the 80s and early 90s.

What is known about TALI - Luxembourg's representative at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024

The singer TALI will represent the Grand Duchy on the stage of the Swedish city of Malmö on May 9, in the first semi-final with her song "Fighter". The song's lyrics tell the story of resilience and strength, encouraging listeners to never give up.

Tali Golergant, 23, lives in New York City, where she works as a vocal coach and music teacher. She also performs in musicals such as Les Misérables (based on Hugo's Les Misérables) and released her first album in 2021.

At the age of 10, Golergant moved to Luxembourg and attended the International School. Tali spent her early years in South America, where she began studying piano at the age of six. She continued to take dance lessons in Luxembourg before moving to New York.

Tali completed her graduate work in musical theater in 2023. She works and lives in New York, but in early December she left her teaching career to take part in the Luxembourg Song Contest.

The Eurovision Diaries host Anna Tullieva spoke to the representative of the Grand Duchy to find out about TALI's impressions of participating in the song contest. The singer admitted that she was shocked to learn about this chance. "More time has passed since Luxembourg's last participation than I have been alive. I am 23, and 31 years have passed. Wow! I still can't describe in words what I feel, but I'm so happy," the singer said.

But Golergant does not hide the fact that she is worried and feels pressure from all sides. "From myself, from friends, family, from Luxembourg, from the world. But I will try to represent my country and myself as best I can on stage," she adds to TALI.

What TALI thinks about Ukraine

By the way, Ukrainian director and creative director Herman Nenov directed the Luxembourg performance at the Eurovision Song Contest. "I am very happy to work with the Ukrainian team," says the contestant. She also noted that she organizes charity events for Ukrainian refugees in Luxembourg. Among the Ukrainian representatives, Golergant singled out Zlata Ognevich with her song "Gravity" and Ruslana and her "Wild Dances".
