Johnny Depp took break from public life on a private island.

A name that has become synonymous with versatility, charisma and eccentricity in the world of cinema is Johnny Depp. He has always captivated audiences with his emotional dedication and merging with his characters: from his early breakthrough role in Edward Scissorhands to his iconic performance of Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. But what is this actor, producer and director like behind the scenes?

In honor of Johnny Depp's 61st birthday, OBOZ.UA will tell you the most interesting facts from his life. Some of them will surprise you.

1. He dreamed of being a musician, not an actor

Johnny Depp has become one of the most successful actors in Hollywood. This did not stop him from realizing his childhood dream of writing compositions and performing in a band. Thus, in the late 90s, he played guitar with Oasis on the songs Fade In-Out and Fade Away. Later, he played drums and guitar in a cover version of Marilyn Manson's You're So Vain... In addition, Depp was entrusted by directors to write music for some of their films with his participation: Once Upon a Time in Mexico and Chocolat.

In 2015, the actor, together with rock musician Alice Cooper ("king of horror and master of shock") and former Aerosmith member Joe Perry, created the rock band Hollywood Vampires, which tours around the world in between filming.

2. He has a pro-Ukrainian position

On July 10, 2023, Russian media and some Ukrainian publics began to spread information that Johnny Depp was allegedly preparing to visit the terrorist country Russia to record a joint track with the band YAMORE. On July 13, a video message to Russians was posted online, in which Depp wished the audience to "take care of yourself" before the screening of the movie Jeanne du Barry.

A day after the incident, the actor's assistant Stephen Deuters explained that Johnny Depp was misunderstood. "No. It was a video shot for the worldwide distribution of the movie. And there will be no visits to Russia," he wrote on Twitter.

After that, Depp, who had long ignored Russia's war against Ukraine, effectively supported Ukraine in early August 2023. In Germany, he met with Ukrainian artist Iryna Fedorenko, a refugee from Mariupol. He took a joint photo with her, talked about her homeland and Russian fakes... In addition, the Hollywood Vampires artist publicly expressed his pro-Ukrainian position: many videos appeared on the Internet where the musicians perform against the backdrop of footage of the war in Ukraine and the blue and yellow flag. One of these shows took place in the German city of Stuttgart.

3. He was blacklisted by Hollywood

Although Johnny Depp's career is full of legendary roles, there is something that almost completely destroyed it. We are talking about the infamous legal battle between him and his ex-wife Amber Heard. In 2017, she filed for divorce after 15 months of marriage and accused the actor of systematic domestic violence.

Then the man filed a lawsuit against her in response and demanded $50 million for an article in The Sun, where his ex-wife called herself a "victim of domestic violence." He lost the case and tarnished his public image... As a result, Warner Bros. removed Johnny from the Fantastic Beasts franchise, while Netflix deleted all films with his participation. At the same time, Disney turned its back on the actor too, so Hollywood calceled him for good.

Depp filed lawsuits against Heard twice more, but they did not help him get justice. At the same time, he was working on several projects in Europe, including a movie called Jeanne du Barry, where he played the lead role. In addition, he toured with his musical group Hollywood Vampires and directed the film Modi, which will premiere in 2024.

In 2022, Johnny managed to win the case against Amber Heard. According to the BBC, the jury concluded that the actress "acted with malice" and slandered her ex-husband, and her statements were false. Will the actor return to filming in Hollywood? Time will tell. What is known is that the new movie in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise will not star Johnny Depp. This was stated by producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

4. He owns an island in the Bahamas

In 2004, Johnny Depp paid $3.6 million to buy an 18-hectare island in the Bahamas called Little Hay's Pond Cay (by the way, it was here that he and Amber Heard had their wedding ceremony in 2015). It has a lagoon lined with coconut palms, solar-powered guest houses, and 6 white sand beaches named after his children, Lily-Rose and John, his ex-partner Vanessa Paradis, writer Hunter Thompson, and actor Marlon Brando.

Depp bought the island to take a break from public life. In 2009, he told Vanity Fair, "You can feel your heart rate drop by about 20 beats, it's instant freedom and a little bit of anonymity... Living on the island is my decompression. It's my way of trying to get back to normal. Escape from reality is survival for me."

5. He often visits hospitals to support seriously ill patients

"Not all treasure is silver and gold, my friend," said Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean adventure franchise. Johnny Depp was especially convinced of this in 2007... Back then, Lily-Rose, his 7-year-old daughter, became seriously ill with E. coli, which caused her kidneys to fail. The girl spent 9 days in Great Ormond Street Hospital and, fortunately, made a full recovery.

Later that year, the actor visited Great Ormond Street dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow. He got into character and spent hours talking to the children and reading them fairy tales, which cheered them up. Now he regularly visits hospitals in different countries and makes donations to charities.
