Trailer of the film "From Where to Where" (Skąd dokąd) about the evacuation of Ukrainians, which will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, has been released
Deadline, the largest Hollywood media outlet for film and television, has exclusively published a trailer for the documentary "From Where to Where" (Skąd dokąd/ In the Rearview), directed by Maciek Hamela, which tells the story of the evacuation of Ukrainians from under fire.
The world premiere of the documentary "From Where to Where" will take place on May 21 at the Cannes International Film Festival. The film is a co-production of Ukraine (435 FILMS), Poland and France. The film is presented in the Cannes ACID programme, for which the ACID (Association of Independent Cinema and Distribution) selects 9 films every year.
The international team will be joined at the premiere by the Ukrainian team of the film - cinematographer Yuriy Dunay, co-producer Anna Palenchuk and production manager Ksenia Marchenko. Together with Maciek Hamela, Ksenia began evacuating Ukrainians from the first days of the full-scale invasion, which they later began filming.
"The trailer very accurately conveys the atmosphere of the film and the circumstances in which Ukrainians found themselves due to the full-scale invasion. It is extremely important to broadcast Ukrainian voices at the largest film festival in the world, which is the focus of the world's media. I am personally very grateful to director Maciek for evacuating refugees for six months on his own, and to the entire Polish people for supporting Ukrainians during the war," said co-producer Anna Palenchuk.
Since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion, Polish filmmaker Maciek Hamela has been working on an evacuation programme to rescue people from dangerous areas such as Chernihiv and Donetsk regions. During one of these trips, Maciek got the idea to document people's stories about their decision to leave their homes and sometimes their families. This is how the filming of the film "From Where to Where" began.
The first days of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. People are faced with uncertainty, and here and now they decide to give up what they have and flee the war. When they board a dusty bus with foreign licence plates, they are holding the most valuable thing they have left. The car travels tens of thousands of kilometres, performing various functions for refugees: waiting rooms, hospitals, shelters, zones of trust and confessions shared by people who met by chance.
"From Where to Where" is a collective portrait composed of the experiences of those who have a single goal: to find a safe haven. In the bus, their temporary shelter, the importance of gender, age, skin colour, physical condition, origin, identity, worldview and faith disappear.
In the Polish and Ukrainian versions of the film's title, Skąd (Where from) and dokąd (where to) are common questions asked when trying to pass through the many checkpoints located on the territory of Ukraine.
