Three-day extravaganza with a laser show and concert in Windsor: how Charles III's coronation will take place and where to watch the ceremony

For the first time since 1902, the coronation ceremony will take place on a weekend rather than a working day

On May 6, 2023, Charles III and his wife Camilla will be coronated. The ceremony will traditionally take place at Westminster Abbey in London, and the service will be led by Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby. The coronation celebrations will last three days, so the British will have an extra day off on Monday, May 8.

OBOZREVATEL will tell you in detail what awaits us on the day of the procession, who will be invited to the gala event, and how long it will last. It is worth noting that Charles will become the 40th reigning monarch of Great Britain (to see the photo, scroll to the end of the page).

Schedule of events

10:20 BST (12:20 Kyiv time) - procession to Westminster Abbey.

11:00 BST (13:00 Kyiv time) - Coronation begins.

14:00 British time (16:00 Kyiv time) - procession to Buckingham Palace, access to the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

Interestingly, Charles will be crowned along with his wife Camilla. The monarch's wife will officially become queen. She is currently Queen Consort, but this prefix will be removed.

What happens at the coronation?

During the ceremony, King Charles takes the coronation oath. The wording has changed over the centuries, but today the monarch pledges to rule in accordance with the law and to administer justice with mercy. After taking the oath, His Majesty is anointed, blessed and consecrated by the Archbishop. Then the Holy Communion takes place.

Who is invited?

In addition to the British royal family, the ceremony will be attended by other dignitaries. It is known that on May 6, representatives of Ireland, France, Spain, Belgium, Japan, Hungary, Monaco, EU President Andrzej Duda, Polish President Andrzej Duda, and Joe Biden's wife Jill Biden will attend. Prince Albert II of Monaco and his wife Charlene, Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and his wife Crown Princess Mary, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden with her father King Carl Gustaf, King Philip VI of Spain and Queen Letizia have confirmed their visit.

How will the celebration take place?

On Sunday, May 7, a concert and laser show will take place at Windsor Castle. Traditionally, street parties are planned. Elton John, the Spice Girls, Harry Styles, Ed Sheeran and Adele have all refused to perform at  Windsor Castle. They cited a busy tour schedule.

Where to watch

Britons and visitors to the country will be able to watch the coronation procession by taking a seat along its route. According to sources, large screens will be installed in cities across the country.

In addition, the online broadcast will be shown live on British TV channels BBC One, BBC Two, ITV 1 and Sky News or streamed via BBC iPlayer, ITVX or Sky News YouTube channel.

Earlier, OBOZREVATEL reported that on April 26, King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla officially opened the Eurovision Song Contest stage in Liverpool. The monarch was entrusted with a responsible mission - to light the lights. After the event, Ukrainian singer Yulia Sanina was able to meet the royals and talk to them about Ukraine.
