"There were a lot of rotten creatures": The Serf star, who worked with Russian actors, talks about their attitude towards them
Ukrainian actress Natalia Vasko, who has starred in many Russian films, such as Return My Love and I Will Do Anything for Love, has admitted that she has a negative attitude toward her Russian colleagues. She has excluded from her work films and TV series in which she played roles with Russians.
As the actress says in an interview with Apostrophe, "I just want to wipe it all away, like dirt from a white wall." But in addition to the above-mentioned series, she is known for her participation in the following Ukrainian films: The Serf, Kruty 1918, The Devoted, Daughters of Mothers, and many others.
"You know, I don't even want to use the word 'colleagues'. I have crossed off all my jobs where I worked with Russians from my list. I just want to wipe it all off, like dirt from a white wall, with a metal spatula," she admitted.
The star recalled that after the start of the full-scale invasion, she rethought her work and "apologized to her country" for working in a team with Russians. However, even before that, she had organized her own little Maidan on the set.
"I don't know if it justifies me that I almost always tried not to allow myself to be humiliated as a Ukrainian. I didn't keep silent when another 'star' started expressing their 'meh' so that I wouldn't speak 'this ugly language'. There were many such rotten creatures in my film biography, and believe me, I did not remain silent in response. This is what I call "my little Maidan". It's a pity that those who witnessed such situations kept silent in their "handkerchiefs" and later said quietly in my ear that they agreed and supported me. You know what the most disgusting thing about it was - this "quietly, in my ear," Natalia Vasko added.
She, like many other artists, tried to reach out to the Russians at the beginning of the great war, but all attempts were in vain. The actress recalls turning to her Ukrainian colleagues who were doing the same and asking them not to "break out of their skin" because she realized that it was a futile endeavor.
In particular, Vasko recalled that at one time Ukrainian actors were in a kind of "psychological twine" when they were filming in Ukraine in Russian films.
"It's scary and strange that speaking Ukrainian on your own land, you were almost always in a catastrophic minority. For many years, Ukrainian actors were in a so-called 'psychological twine'. Projects, seemingly Ukrainian, are filmed in Ukraine, but for some reason in Russian, with Russian actors in the lead roles... What a grief it all turned out to be," she noted.
Earlier, Natalia Vasko admitted to OBOZ.UA that she had been preparing for the war for six months before the invasion and was very angry with those Ukrainians who did not take the threat seriously.
