The star of the controversial Netflix series was found dead in a prison cell: the actor was only 29 years old
John "Eastside" McAllister, an actor in the Netflix documentary series Unlocked: A Jail Experiment, was found dead on June 2 in his prison cell. The man was only 29 years old, and he was due to be released in a month.
According to the Mirror, the authorities denied the possibility of suicide. The series, which starred John McAllister, was released in April 2024, but even then it received a lot of hate because of social experiments on people.
What made the 29-year-old man special during the filming was that he tried to find optimism everywhere and smile even when it was difficult. Throughout the series, he expressed a desire to start his life over and redeem himself.
"His sudden death has devastated our family," said his aunt, Melissa Regan.
John McAllister was imprisoned for ten drug-related crimes, trespassing, theft, and illegal possession of firearms. He had served 14 prison terms and more than 10 years behind bars.
The film Free: The Prison Experiment is based on observations of the behavior of prisoners at the Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff, USA. The men were given more freedom and responsibility for their actions: the doors were no longer locked and the guards no longer kept order. Then McAllister decided to start a business – he started tattooing.
"I want to humanize people. I want to empower people to influence their culture, their environment, and their community," explained project manager Eric Higgins about the idea of creating Prison Break: The Prison Experiment.
American society is concerned about the series because it has been turned into a reality show. "The question is not whether the governor has the opportunity to try something out of the box, something new in prison. The concern is, why did it turn into a reality show?" said Judge Phil Stowers.
