Squid Game star dies after suffering from cancer

South Korean actress Lee Joo-sil, who played the role of Park Mal-sung in the second season of the popular Netflix series The Squid Game, has died. She passed away on February 2 at her home in Uijeongbu, South Korea, at the age of 81.

In November 2024, the actress was diagnosed with stomach cancer, which she fought to the last. The tragic news was reported by Forbes.

At the age of 50, doctors diagnosed her with stage three breast cancer, and the prognosis was disappointing - she was given less than a year to live. However, 13 years later, she was declared completely healthy, which was a real miracle for her and her family. However, at the age of 79, she was diagnosed with cancer again. This time it was stomach cancer.

Lee Joo-sil was a famous actress in her homeland. Her career began in 1964 when she became a dubbing actress. Later, she gained recognition as a leading actress in theater and on screen. In 1965, she made her stage debut in Death of a Salesman and Macbeth, which became important milestones in her theatrical career.

In movies, Lee Joo-sil is remembered for many roles. She starred in the famous South Korean thriller Train to Busan in 2016, which gained worldwide fame. She also took part in the filming of the Supernatural Counter series in 2020.

She was particularly memorable for her role in Squid Game, where she played the mother of undercover detective Hwang Joon Ho and the stepmother of Hwang In Ho. Her character was characterized by kindness and care, although she often blamed herself for the tense relationship with her son.
