The legendary shirt of Mr. Darcy from the 1995 film adaptation of Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice was sold at auction for a record amount. Almost 20 years ago, actor Colin Firth won the hearts of the audience with the image of an English gentleman.
In particular, the wet shirt that gave the star the title of sex symbol was memorable. According to Business Insider, the item went under the hammer for more than a million hryvnias (31 thousand dollars).
The garment Mr. Darcy wore on screen during the lake scene in the Pride and Prejudice miniseries was one of 69 costumes up for auction in London on March 5.
A wet shirt was the most popular lot, said Kerry Taylor, a representative of the auction house.
The expert predicted that the item would cost between 300 thousand hryvnias and 500 thousand hryvnias. But on the evening of March 5, the shirt was sold for a record amount of over a million hryvnias.
The men's white linen blouse has a deep V-neck that is fastened with two small buttons. The product's designer, Dinah Collin, said that Firth's "wet shirt scene" was not part of the original Pride and Prejudice script.
The idea came about while discussing how to get around nudity censorship when Mr. Darcy emerges from the lake after a "cooling swim on a hot summer day." "At the time, this scene caused a certain sensation and turned Colin Firth from a respected classical actor into a sex symbol," the designer added.
