The alleged rivalry between the Prince and Princess of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex has been well documented. A new book by a royal expert sheds more light on why problems began to arise between the two couples.

In his new work, titled Catherine, Princess of Wales: A Biography of the Future Queen, Robert Jobson discussed the events that led to the royal split. In an excerpt published by the Daily Mail, the author wrote: "Initially, the public reaction to Meghan was overwhelmingly positive, with the 'new kids in the family' grabbing most of the headlines - to the point where William and Catherine may have unknowingly raised the temperature. There was talk of pettiness and even envy."

As soon as the problems began, relations between the newly minted in-laws deteriorated markedly. "The cracks between the two couples continued to widen over petty grievances," explained Jobson. Soon the situation became irreparable, writes Marie Claire.

Although it is unclear whether Kate and William were actually jealous of Meghan and Harry, there were obvious changes in their relationship. The royal expert also recalled one of the situations that allegedly occurred between Kate and Meghan. "There was a time when Meghan asked to borrow a lip gloss, and Harry thought that Catherine was reluctant to give hers away," Jobson says. According to him, Middleton "cringed" after Markle squeezed some gloss onto her finger and applied it to her lips.

Prince Harry and Prince William, who once seemed close, have also suddenly fallen out of favor. "Inevitably, details of the royal brothers' troubled relationship were leaked, as well as the fact that Catherine and Meghan also had a falling out," the excerpt reads.
