Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were spotted volunteering in fire-stricken California, but it was not without scandal
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry appeared at the Pasadena Convention Center in California, which is being used as an evacuation center to support victims of the massive fires in Los Angeles. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex helped to distribute food packages and talked to volunteers and Mayor Victor Gordo. Their visit provoked a positive reaction from the victims and rescuers, but it was not without controversy in the media.
During a live news broadcast on FOX LA, anchor Susan Hirasuna said that the royal couple was volunteering only for PR, but before that, she called Meghan a "princess" and noted that the duchess "hangs out with commoners," the Daily Mail reported. These statements caused a wave of outrage online. Viewers accused the host of being unprofessional, emphasizing that Meghan is the Duchess of Sussex, not a princess.
In particular, the mayor of Pasadena, Victor Gordo, noted that the prince and his wife "did not seek publicity" and worked alongside other volunteers, even anonymously distributing food while wearing masks. In addition, the couple made their home available as a shelter for the victims and encouraged Americans who are safe to do the same.
"They really lifted the spirits of those who arrived at the scene. We visited the command center in the Rose Bowl and people were very happy to see them," explained the mayor. "They want to be as helpful as possible, and really they just want to be supportive. They took the time to meet with the people who were affected and spend time with them. They are just very caring people who care a lot about their friends and neighbors."
Earlier on the air, Hirasuna called Meghan a "princess," which led to disgruntled viewers criticizing her words. On social media, they explained that the royal should not be called that (only the Duchess of Sussex) because it is not her official title.
"Dear Madam, Markle is not a princess. She is a duchess and has no right to use that title. Just for your information," said one of the commenters.
