Marisa Peredes, one of the cult actresses of Spanish cinema, has died at the age of 79. The star left behind a rich career, having played more than 75 roles.

In particular, the celebrity went down in cinema history thanks to her collaboration with director Pedro Almodóvar, a multiple winner of the Cannes Film Festival and a member of the American Academy of Arts. In his works, she has played a number of his iconic characters: the prima donna Becky del Páramo in High Heels and the writer Amanda Gris in The Flower of My Secret. For the latter role, she was nominated for Goya Awards, according to the official website of the Spanish film academy.

Marisa Peredes became famous after starring in Pedro Almodóvar's films.

Paredes studied at the Royal Higher College of Performing Arts (Real Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático | RESAD) in Madrid and made her film debut at the age of 14, appearing in Jose Osuna's Noche de teatro and José María Forqué's 091 Policía al habla. In the sixties and seventies of the last century, she played supporting roles, and with the advent of the eighties and the emergence of Fernando Trueba's Opera Prima, she consolidated her career. After appearing in Trueba's first feature film, she also appeared in the first works of other prominent Spanish filmmakers, such as Agustí Villaronga.

Her collaboration with Almodóvar opened the door to international cinema, where she has appeared in films such as Roberto Benigni's La vida es bella, Arturo Ripstein's Profundo carmesí, and Guillermo del Toro's The Devil's Backbone. From 2000 to 2003, she was the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, an institution that in 2018 honored her with the Goya Award. "It's a matter of taking this trade with total rigour and seriousness. It requires dedication, courage, strength: discouragement must not defeat you," Marisa said in an interview.
