Princess Kate Middleton of Wales made her first public appearance after announcing that she was in remission from cancer. She made a last-minute decision to join Prince William at the Holocaust Remembrance Day ceremony in London, England.
Buckingham Palace confirmed that 43-year-old Kate Middleton decided to accompany her husband, 42-year-old Prince William, at the official service dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Jews from the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. The event, which took place on January 27, was one of the key events of Holocaust Remembrance Day, People magazine reports.

Prince William was a scheduled participant in the ceremony, but Princess Kate's participation came as a surprise. She decided to join the service after she officially announced her remission on January 14.
At the event, Middleton said: "It's good to be here." The princess was dressed in all black, and her look was complemented by Queen Elizabeth's earrings, which she had previously worn to the memorial ceremony last November.

Holocaust Remembrance Day is dedicated to the memory of the six million Jews who perished during the Holocaust, as well as the millions of other victims of Nazi persecution. The date of January 27 was not chosen by chance – it was on this day in 1945 that Allied forces liberated the largest Nazi death camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau.
This year's event included touching speeches, memoirs, and testimonies from Holocaust survivors. The prince and princess also discussed their desire to educate children about the Holocaust, the Daily Mail reports. Prince William said: "George is approaching the age when he begins to understand things. So it becomes interesting to talk to him about what happened."
