John Lennon was killed near her home, and Elvis Presley sang the artist's main hit: what is known about Roberta Flack, who died at 88

On February 24, American R&B singer Roberta Flack, who became famous for her hits The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face and Killing Me Softly With His Song, died. She was 88 years old.

Roberta lived in New York City in the Dakota apartment complex, near where singer John Lennon was shot dead in 1980. Flack ended her career in 2022 after being diagnosed with motor neuron disease, which left her unable to sing. This was reported by the BBC.

"We are heartbroken that the famous Roberta Flack passed away this morning, February 24, 2025," her representatives said. Roberta broke boundaries and records. She was also a proud educator."

Roberta Flack was born in North Carolina and raised in Virginia, USA, and at the age of 15 received a scholarship to Howard University as a classical pianist. Later, she started singing in clubs, which was the impetus for her musical career.

She gained worldwide fame in 1972 when her song The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face was featured in Clint Eastwood's movie Play Misty for Me. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 and was later covered by world stars, including Elvis Presley.

The following year, Flack won a Grammy Award for Killing Me Softly With His Song. In 1996, the song gained a second wave of popularity thanks to The Fugees.

"This is a huge honor. Throughout my career, I have tried to tell stories through my music. This award is a confirmation for me that my colleagues have heard my thoughts and perceived what I was trying to give," she said while receiving the award.
