Ukrainian director and screenwriter Oleh Sentsov, who joined the Ukrainian Armed Forces since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, said that his greatest motivation to join the army was the desire to pay back the enemy. He added that despite the fact that this is the only way to legally kill the occupiers, he has never taken their lives personally.

The soldier said this in an interview with Ukrinform. He noted that he prefers capturing Russians rather than eliminating them.

According to Oleh, the desire to take revenge on the enemy for his many years of detention in Russia appeared immediately after the outbreak of the war, "There is a desire for revenge. And this was one of the reasons why I joined the army. Because this is the only opportunity now to legally kill enemies. Later, there will be no such opportunity."

The Ukrainian said that despite the difficult conditions on the battlefield, he has no personal "disadvantages". He did not have to kill the enemy immediately after detection.

"When we ambushed the last enemy, it was my choice: either to give the command to destroy them because they were openly visible to us, or to take them prisoner. The situation was not risky for us, so we took them prisoner," the director said.

Sentsov noted that every soldier must have his own motivation because in its absence, they will be of no use, "A person cannot be forced to fight. You can catch him on the street, put him in a truck, take his documents and phones away, take him to a training center, keep him there almost under guard, bring him to the brigade, and he will say, 'I don't want to fight, I won't.' Why do we need such a fighter?"
