It became known who forced the entire Polyakova family to switch to the Ukrainian language
Ukrainian singer Olya Polyakova, who was involved in a language scandal back in 2022 and later renounced the Russian language, admitted who influenced her decision to do so. As it turned out, the impetus for the family's Ukrainization came not from public condemnation but from the singer's then 10-year-old daughter, Alisa.
The schoolgirl, according to the star, forbade the whole family to address her in the language of the occupiers and "irritated" her family until they started to listen. Olya Polyakova spoke about this in an interview with Slava Demin on YouTube.
When asked whether the artist's mother speaks Russian in the UK, where she lives with Polyakova's younger daughter, the singer jokingly replied that Alisa is a "total Nazi."
"My mom hasn't spoken Russian for a long time. She can't. She's with Alisa. Alisa is double Olya Polyakove. She is a total Nazi. Alisa switched to Ukrainian and forbade anyone to address her in Russian. And she forbade everyone to communicate in it," the singer said.
The artist emphasized that everyone in the family listened to the youngest daughter, so their resistance did not last long.
"We were all very angry, we stomped our feet, we said, 'Well, you speak Ukrainian, but don't correct us.' She had such eyes..." Polyakova recalled.
The singer admitted that she thought that changing the language in everyday life was a problem, but after trying, she realized how "everything fell into place."
In the summer of 2022, Polyakova and her TV presenter friend Masha Efrosinina admitted that they were harshly criticized and even mocked online because of their joint show in Russian. The celebrities explained that it was easier for them to formulate thoughts and tell stories from their personal experience.
The position of the stars caused condemnation among ordinary Ukrainians and famous colleagues of the scandal's defendants. For example, Oleksandr Pedan advised them to see a psychologist, and the leader of the Bez Obmezhen band Serhii Tanchynets suggested that it would be better not to go on the air at all.
As OBOZ.UA wrote, in August last year, after a flurry of criticism, Olya Polyakova suddenly changed her rhetoric and started speaking Ukrainian. Moreover, she even launched her own show to promote her native language. Masha Efrosinina eventually renounced Russian as well.
