"I am crying with you": how Alain Delon supported Ukraine in the war with Russia

The legendary French actor Alain Delon, who died on August 18, was one of the world's most famous people who expressed support for Ukraine and its army. He admired our people, military, and president, and recited poems by the classics of Ukrainian literature.

The sex symbol of European cinema of the 60s and 80s also said that he would have joined the Armed Forces if he had been 50 years younger. OBOZ.UA decided to recall the actor's attitude towards Ukraine in the difficult times of the war with Russia.

Thus, in September 2022, the legendary actor spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and read an excerpt from My Testament by Taras Shevchenko. This was part of a program dedicated to Ukraine that Alain Delon recorded for the French TV5 Monde channel.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, "I have never been such a great actor as you. You are my inspiration". The Frenchman responded with words of support for him and all Ukrainians, "I will never be as brilliant and worthy a president as you. I am crying with you."

At the end of the conversation, Alain Delon confessed, "If I were 50 years younger, I would join the Ukrainian army." He expressed his admiration for the Ukrainian Armed Forces and the entire nation. The legendary actor also read Shevchenko's "My Testament" in French out loud.

Before that, Alain Delon received an official invitation from Zelenskyy to visit Ukraine and admitted that he would come as soon as his health improved (he had suffered a stroke two years earlier).

The movie legend never managed to visit Ukraine. A month ago, his daughter Anouchka said that despite being recognized as incapacitated, her father remained handsome, well-groomed and elegant. It was said that he had cancer and was fighting Alzheimer's disease.

Alain Delon's heart stopped on August 18, 2024, at the age of 89. Although the cause of his death has not been disclosed, many media outlets report that he was preparing for it when he died on screen many times.
