"Europe doesn't know what phosphorus bombs are". Jerry Heil and alyona alyona showed their fiery performance at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 and provoked a discussion

The singers Jerry Heil and alyona alyona, who will represent Ukraine at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in the first semi-final to be held on Tuesday, May 7, have demonstrated a part of their second rehearsal, which created a sensation for the Euro fans. One of the most famous directors in the world, Tania Muinho, worked on the production, so it was enough to finalize the images and the number after the first rehearsal, and now the singers have already shown part of the final result to the public.

They explained in an interview with Billboard that their song and performance primarily depict war and the fight against the enemy. "War is a part of our song. We cannot separate it. The song was created under blows and anxiety. Sometimes we think that war is nothing, because it has become a part of our lives. But subconsciously we are always under stress. And leaving the country you feel more stress than coming back here," explained Jerry Heil.

That's probably why in the footage of the second rehearsal you can see phosphorus bombs on the screens, which seem to be falling on the Ukrainians, who, in turn, are portrayed by Jerry Heil climbing a mountain. However, the Ukrainian audience believes that Europeans are unlikely to understand what all the symbols that the singers put into the number mean, so they are asking them for an official interpretation and revision of the number.

On her Facebook page, journalist Mariana Piecukh shared her opinion on the speech: "I see phosphorus bombs in the background. I take it that this is what they are? The main thing is to convey to Europeans that this is not a fireworks display, that is, the idea that they wanted to convey was conveyed in some other way. I'm not sure that everyone here will see phosphorus bombs, because for obvious reasons, no one knows about them. I would like to add multi-storey buildings from below for an outsider's understanding of the apocalypse, but probably the rules don't allow it."

In the comments, some Euro fans supported it, while others questioned whether Europeans would even understand the number:

• "It doesn't look like a fireworks display, but if you haven't seen phosphorus flying, you might not guess."
• "It looks 100% like shelling to me."
• "Eurovision viewers probably watched fewer videos of our shelling, for obvious reasons, so they are unlikely to associate it immediately."
• "If not an association with phosphorus, then definitely with fire, or shells, like a battlefield. It doesn't look like fireworks at all."
• "You're right, but there should be an official interpretation from the press service, not guesswork. Europe doesn't know what phosphorus bombs are."
• "I think it's about art and empathy. If a person has it, then Ukraine, along with this visualization, will have the desired effect."

The number itself is full of symbolism, both on stage and in the images. In the backstage of the first rehearsal, the singers said that their costumes are a reference, in particular, to the princely era.

"What symbolism did you find in the fact that we have such princely jewelry, chainmail of those times, look at the sleeve of Yana's armor, the metal shoulder. Armor. Did everyone see the sword [in her hair]?" said alyona alyona.

It is worth noting that the first footage from the rehearsals was also published on the official Eurovision YouTube channel. Among the selection of the first participants, Eurofans distinguish the performance of the Ukrainian representatives as one of the best.

Alyona alyona told about the idea of the song as follows: "We're talking about people who may not live a perfect life and make some mistakes, but in the end they show kindness. If you combine kindness and love, you can win a war. You can change the world. You can leave something to children and children's children. This is important."
