Die Hard 2 star Tom Bauer passed away
American actor Tom Bauer has died at the age of 86. His most prominent roles were Dr. Curtis Willard in the Waltons series and the janitor Marvin, who helped John McClane stop terrorists in the movie Die Hard 2.
The celebrity died in his sleep at his home in Los Angeles on May 30, his daughter-in-law Mary Miller told The Hollywood Reporter. Among the actor's other famous works are the 1995 film Nixon starring Anthony Hopkins, where Bauer played the father of the 37th President of the United States, and the film Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (2009), in which Tom played the role of Nicolas Cage's father.
Ralph Thomas Bauer was born in Denver on January 3, 1938. When he realized that he was not talented enough to become a professional baseball player, he came to New York and entered the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1956.
The star studied acting at the John Cassavetes' acting workshops Shadows. Years later, he got a job as a private detective in Boston. According to his daughter-in-law, he was also the founder of the Boston Repertory Theater, where he gave acting lessons to Al Pacino.
In 1972, while still a detective, Bauer was cast in David Rabe's film The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel with Pacino, which won a Tony Award in 1977. Tom later moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career.
In Die Hard 2 (1990), Bauer's character Marvin lives in the basement of Dulles International Airport. He helps McClane, played by Bruce Willis.
