Colin Farrell talks about his 20-year-old son's rare disease: what is Angelman syndrome
Irish actor Colin Farrell, known for his roles in the films Phone Booth, Recruit, Miami Vice: Vice Squad, etc., spoke about his 20-year-old son's rare disease. He shared the misfortune his family faced and how it affected them.
Farrell's heir, James, suffers from Angelman syndrome. The actor decided to dedicate his newly created charity foundation to supporting people with this disease, People writes.
James cannot speak and eats poorly on his own, so he needs special care.
"This is the first time I'm talking about this, and obviously the only reason I'm talking is because I can't ask James if he wants to do it. I'm talking to James as if he's 20 years old and he's fluent in English and has age-appropriate cognitive abilities. But I can't get a concrete answer from him as to whether he's comfortable with it or not, so I have to make a decision based on knowing James' spirit," Farrell explained.
The actor is raising his son with his ex-model wife Kim Bordenave. James recognizes his father, loves to play and behaves in a socialized way. His parents adore their son and help him with everything.
"Repetition, balance, his twitchy walk. When he first started feeding himself, his face resembled Jackson Pollock's paintings until the end. But he's doing great, he's feeding himself perfectly. I'm proud of him every day because I think he's just adorable," his father said.
Colin Farrell is committed to helping people who suffer from Angelman syndrome and are single after the age of 21.
This disease is characterized by mental retardation, sleep disturbances, seizures, chaotic movements (especially of the hands) and uncontrollable laughter. Because of the latter symptom, the genetic disease is sometimes called "happy doll syndrome" or "Parsley syndrome".
