CNN journalist explains how events in Ukraine are covered in Portugal: the war is tiresome, it's not trendy, news is like football

Portuguese journalist explains how his colleagues abroad write about Ukraine

Ireneu Teixeira, a Portuguese journalist who covers the war in Ukraine for the CNN channel, believes that news about Russian terrorism and the success of Ukrainians is increasingly reminiscent of sports stories. He explained that this is due to the lack of high-profile events and "fatigue" from the war in the world.

According to the journalist, the world's attention is now focused on the events in Israel, but he disagrees and refuses to shift the focus. Ireneu spoke about this in an interview with OBOZ.UA.

"Contemporary news can be safely compared to fast food. When you eat and no longer feel that you are eating. The war is tiring because there is no big news. So we'll talk about something else, something more important at the moment," the correspondent explained.

He accused modern journalism of revolving around "trendy" events. Because of this spontaneous and superficial approach, readers and viewers are often misinformed and not given a complete picture of events.

"News about Ukraine is becoming like a football game for them. "Ukraine is launching a counteroffensive" sounds to them like "Ukraine has scored a goal," Teixeira said of the approach of foreign journalists.

However, the Portuguese still sees that his colleagues in his homeland continue to be interested in events in Ukraine and help Ukrainians despite the difficult financial situation in the country.

"Yes, there is more talk now about the war in Israel, and the channel where I work asked me to cover events only related to Israel, which I categorically did not agree to. I asked my colleagues, 'If the war has started in Israel, it means that it ended in Ukraine?' I have been talking, I am talking and I will continue to talk about Ukraine until it defeats the occupiers!" the journalist assured.
