Children cried, parents called the police: Willy Wonka's exhibition in Glasgow turned into a farce and became a source of memes

Willy Wonka's exhibition in Glasgow ended with police and hysteria

In the wake of the popularity of the prequel Wonka, which depicted the background to the events of the main movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, House of Illuminati in Glasgow, Scotland, decided to create a holiday for children based on the movie with a bunch of giant sweets, a chocolate fountain, a laboratory of wonders, and giant mushrooms. Many parents "fell for" the colorful poster, which was actually created by artificial intelligence, and later regretted the money they spent. But this situation created a lot of memes online.

Instead of what was promised in the advertisement, the Scots found themselves in a half-empty warehouse with a few decorations and actors who made the children hysterical. This "entertainment" cost 35 pounds sterling (1690 UAH). The organizers claimed that the event was supposed to be "a celebration of chocolate in all its wonderful forms," but according to The Guardian, it was only worthy of the Oompa-Loompa song.

Because of the ruined weekend and the money wasted, the Scots called the police and demanded a refund from House of Illuminati, which they promised to pay within 10 days. Parents also created a Facebook group where they still discuss the horrific event and post photos of the failed scenery and their children's emotions. Willy Wonka's Experience was labeled by people as a "farce," i.e. a cheap imitation.

Another request to the police was about people being robbed. Alana Lockers said that she booked tickets in advance for 35 pounds sterling, but a week later their price had already dropped to 18 pounds sterling (870 UAH).

"I originally booked tickets when they were being sold as Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory Experience for £35 per ticket. A week or so later, I went back to the site to send someone a link and saw that the site had changed to artificial intelligence 'creations' and that it had been rebranded as Willy's Chocolate Experience, and tickets were now £18 each. Obviously, I started to smell a rat, but I kept a sober mind," she said.

The event's advertising promised giant mushrooms, candy canes, chocolate fountains, and special audio and visual effects. It was all told by dancing Oompa Loompas (tiny men who work at Wonka's chocolate factory). Instead, upon arrival, the parents found a sparsely decorated white warehouse with plastic props, a small bouncy castle and decorations attached to the walls, and Oompa Loompas looking like they had been partying all night.

Interestingly, after complaints from the Scots, the organizers stopped the event only a few hours later, which meant that many people who had traveled hundreds of kilometers managed to get to the warehouse and were disappointed. Now they are demanding a refund from the House of Illuminati not only for the tickets they purchased, but also for travel expenses.

Stand-up comedian Paul Connell, who was invited to play Willy Wonka, told the Independent that the entire event was created by artificial intelligence, including his 15-page script, and the organizers did not care about inaccuracies or their hackwork.

"On Thursday, the 22nd [the event took place on Saturday, February 24], I got a call and was told: "Congratulations, you're going to play Willy Wonka, we're going to send you a script, and tomorrow we're going to have a dress rehearsal." The script consisted of 15 pages of gibberish created by artificial intelligence, about me just talking about these horrible things [that were props]. What got me was that I had to say: "There is a man whose name we don't know." But we know him as the Unknown! This Unknown is an evil chocolate maker who lives in the walls. At the end of my monologue, I had to vacuum up the Unknown with a vacuum cleaner. I asked them if they had a vacuum cleaner and they said: "Yeah, we haven't gotten to that yet, so just improvise," Connell recalled.

Despite the wave of outrage for Internet users, the event became an opportunity to remember the collapse in memes, which are now growing exponentially. The most prominent characters were the green, weird Oompa Loompa and the scary Unknown, who caused hysteria among children.
