Britney Spears has spent more than $2 million on legal bills for her father, who has been taking care of the singer for 13 years
Singer Britney Spears has agreed to pay $2.12 million to cover the legal costs of her father, Jamie Spears, in a case over her 13-year-old custody. In 2021, the court revoked Britney's conservatorship, which allowed her father to control her finances and personal life. The legal battle lasted for several more years, and in April 2024, the parties entered into a settlement agreement.
Jamie Spears has been controlling the singer since 2008, People reports. This decision was made due to concerns about her mental health but eventually became the subject of scandals and public outrage. The singer's father had full control over her finances, personal life, and even career decisions.
The legal battle for a final settlement of the financial issues continued for several more years. Britney's lawyer, Matthew S. Rosengart, insisted that she should not have to pay her father's expenses, especially given the allegations of financial abuse by him.
According to the documents, Britney was supposed to pay $500,000 to the law firm Saul Ewing and $1.62 million to Willkie Farr & Gallagher. The singer fulfilled her obligations within the established 60-day period, otherwise she could have been charged additional costs or interest. In the end, she fulfilled all her financial obligations on time.
Court documents state that neither party admits any wrongdoing or liability. In addition, they both waived their right to appeal. This means that the conflict is officially closed and Britney will no longer have to appear in court in this case.
"This was a great outcome for Britney, as she won't have to testify or participate in court proceedings, which she absolutely did not want," the source said.
