Almost all the actors died: the fate of the stars of the movie "Chasing Two Hares," which was stymied by the Soviet government

February 13, 2025, marks the 116th anniversary of the birth of Viktor Ivanov, the director of the legendary film "Chasing Two Hares." Released in 1961, this comedy has become one of the most beloved films in Ukrainian cinema. Not only did it win the hearts of the audience, but it also faced considerable difficulties because of the Soviet regime.

On the occasion of this date, OBOZ.UA recalls the fate of the actors who made this movie a cult favorite. "Chasing Two Hares" was filmed in Ukrainian, but this caused a negative reaction in the USSR. Soviet officials insisted on Russian dubbing, as they believed that the Ukrainian-language version would not be in demand. As a result, the original recording of the movie was considered lost for a long time. It was only in 2013 that researchers, by chance, uncovered the Ukrainian version in Mariupol's archives.

Despite all the difficulties, the film has gained popularity and retained its status as a cult comedy. More than 60 years have passed since the movie's release, and most of its stars have already passed away. However, their roles remain in the history of Ukrainian cinema.

Oleh Borysov (Svyryd Holokhvostyi)

One of the most famous Soviet actors who continued his successful career after "Chasing Two Hares." His talent was recognized not only in comedies but also in serious dramatic roles. During his career, he played more than 50 movie roles. Toward the end of his life, however, Borysov clashed with the Soviet system and was censored.

He died in 1994 as a result of leukemia.

Marharyta Krynytsyna (Pronia Prokopivna)

The role of Pronia Prokopyvna became the main one in her career. Despite her bright comedic talent, she did not get many leading roles in films, although she played in the theater and remained popular with the audience.

She died in 2005.

Mykola Yakovchenko (Prokip Sirko)

A famous Ukrainian actor who was not only a movie star but also an outstanding theater performer. His comedic talent and charisma made him one of the most beloved actors of his time.

He died in 1974 during an appendectomy.

Nonna Koperzhynska (Sekleta Lymerykha)

She played the comic mother of Pronia, and in life, she was one of the most respected actresses of Ukrainian cinema. She was active in theater and acted extensively.

She died in 1999 due to cancer.

Taisiia Lytvynenko (Khymka)

Among all the actors of "Chasing Two Hares," the only one who is still alive is Taisiia Lytvynenko, who played the role of Khymka. She didn't act in films very often, so her most prominent work remains the movie "Chasing Two Hares."
