5 strict rules celebrities must adhere to during award ceremonies

Darya SkubEntertainment
Stars often break the rules of award ceremonies.

Take a look behind the scenes of large-scale award ceremonies such as the Oscars, Critics Choice Awards, or BAFTA. It's not as easy and relaxed as we see in the broadcasts. Why? The organizers think through every detail to maintain their image in the public eye. One of them is the rules for the stars. If at least one of them is violated, there is a risk that this person will not receive an invitation again.

Thus, what should stars do during award shows and what is strictly forbidden? Read in the OBOZ.UA article.

1. You can only walk on one lane of the carpet

The red carpet at award ceremonies is usually divided into two lanes. One of them is for the leaders (i.e., the most popular stars), and the other is for the rest of the guests. Why is this necessary? To make it easier for photographers to capture world-famous celebrities in their camera lenses: they have to take thousands of shots to choose the most successful ones.

2. Keep your distance

Photographers often ask non-celebrity guests to stay as far away from celebrities as possible. To do this, they use the polite (and at the same time daring!) phrase "can we get a fashion?". In essence, this means that the person has to get out of the frame.

The stars try to follow this rule by default: they move away from the "ordinary" guests themselves (they don't like it, but they are not the ones who "run the party").

3. Dress code must not be violated

At the afterparty, celebrities can wear "naked" outfits, strange dresses, such as those with a lion prop, ultra-mini, etc. However, during award ceremonies, it is forbidden to shock the audience!

Men should wear strict suits (preferably with a tailcoat) and ties, and women should wear evening midi or maxi dresses with pumps. Of course, over the years, there have been some who violated this rule. For example, in 1974, the singer Cher came to the Oscars in a revealing outfit that exposed her stomach and legs (it looked more like a pareo wrap than a suit).

We would like to add that the SAG and Oscar ceremonies encourage stars to popularize sustainable fashion. What does this mean? This is eco-fashion with an ethical focus. Its key principles are the use of recycling technologies and the purchase of high-quality clothing that can be used for a long time.

So, the organizers of the above ceremonies ask all guests to come in old dresses (i.e. those that the stars have worn many times before), rent designer clothes or vintage. Here is one example. Irish actress Saoirse Ronan liked this initiative: she attended the 2020 Oscars in a dress the bodice of which was made from the fabric of her BAFTA gown.

4. It is forbidden to violate the time regulations

At large-scale events such as celebrity awards ceremonies, it can be difficult to get to the restroom. To do so, you need to stand in a long line. Do the organizers take this into account? No, they don't. If one of the stars didn't get on stage in time when his or her name was announced, other celebrities go up on stage instead to accept the award. There have been some funny situations related to this. For example, in 2014, during the Brit Awards ceremony, British singer Harry Styles barely had time to run on stage. He then apologized that he had to step back to... Well, you get the idea.

By the way, celebrities have a limited amount of time to speak: 45 seconds. At best, it's 90 (but this includes the seconds it takes to get to the microphone). Don't be surprised why stars often fall when they get up on stage.

Immediately after the speech, the celebrities go backstage, where the press is waiting for them, usually with boilerplate questions like "how do you feel about winning" or "where will you keep the trophy".

5. No food or drinks are allowed

Some award ceremonies last about three hours (without a red carpet fashion show!). With this in mind, the American Golden Globe Film Awards offers dinner to guests, but the most prestigious award in US cinema (the Oscars) does not. In addition, the latter prohibits bringing snacks and drinks. Do celebrity guests follow this rule? Not quite. For many of them, this is a challenge that must be changed. For example, in 2014, actress, comedian, and TV presenter Ellen DeGeneres ordered pizza delivery for the Oscars. The food was enjoyed by the audience.
