During Russia's nighttime missile-drone strike against Ukraine on May 16, no hits to energy infrastructure were recorded, but on the evening of May 15, the occupiers shelled one of the thermal power plants and also struck power lines. Some consumers in six regions - Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, Kharkiv, Kherson, and Chernihiv - remain without power.

This was reported by the Ministry of Energy,Ukrenergo and DTEK. It is noted that the blackouts are taking place in the frontline regions that continue to be terrorized by the Russian Federation. The blackouts are pinpointed, and no schedules have been introduced.

"On the evening of May 15, shelling again damaged one of DTEK Energy's thermal power plants. Fortunately, there were no casualties. As a result of the attack, the TPP's equipment was damaged. After the shelling stopped, the power engineers began to eliminate its consequences," DTEK noted.

"In frontline regions, Russian shelling yesterday (May 15 - Ed.) damaged one of the main power lines that supplies power to power plants in the east of the country.... Also, in the frontline regions, regional power networks are under constant enemy fire," Ukrenergo also reported.

The Ministry of Energy added that the massive overnight attack avoided any new hits. "The air defense forces worked successfully, no hits to energy infrastructure facilities were recorded," the statement said.

DTEK notes that this was the third attack on the company's generation facilities since the beginning of May. In total, DTEK Energy's thermal power plants have been attacked 33 times since September 2022.

Power engineers continue repair work. During the day, power was returned to the homes of more than 31,000 consumers.

"The power system has significantly reduced the amount of available capacity and reserves. The reason is that power units of power plants that were subjected to massive Russian missile and drone strikes during the fall and spring have been stopped for repairs. There is also a seasonal repair campaign at nuclear power plants. The stopped power units do not produce electricity, so the energy system needs to activate all available reserves to provide consumers with electricity," Ukrenergo warned.

As reported by OBOZREVATEL, earlier Ukrainians were warned about possible blackouts in summer, especially in July and August. However, it will not be critical blackouts for several days.
