Moldova has changed its mind about restricting imports of Ukrainian grain

Moldova abandoned its intention to impose restrictions on imports of Ukrainian grain. According to the country's minister of agriculture, on the one hand, this measure "would have produced zero results," while on the other hand, retaliatory measures by Ukraine would have led to many losses for Moldova's agricultural sector.

This is reported by NewsMaker. Also, it is noted that since the volume of imports of agricultural products from Ukraine is insignificant - about 177 tons of wheat and 4 thousand tons of sunflower seeds - and the elevators in Moldova allow to store about 3 million tons of products, "Moldovan farmers have a place to store grain.

"Imposing restrictions on imports would not solve anything. It would lead neither to an increase in selling prices for Moldovan farmers nor to a decrease in production costs. This decision would have yielded zero results. On the contrary, Ukraine would impose restrictions on the import of Moldovan products, and then much would be lost," the minister said.

In addition, he said, Moldova is not considering the possibility of banning the transit of grain from Ukraine through Moldova. After all, according to him, "transit does not affect negatively.

What preceded it

Earlier, the Ministry of Agriculture of Moldova announced its plans to join the EU decision on a temporary ban on imports of crops from Ukraine. They explained their decision there:

  • an alleged lack of storage space;
  • concern of local farmers about this.

In response, the Ukrainian government said it was preparing to ban Moldovan imports. "We informed Chișinău - any restriction by Moldova will be considered an extremely unfriendly step and will entail an urgent ban of all imports from Moldova," said Deputy Minister of Economy, Trade and Agriculture Taras Kachka.

As reported by OBOZREVATEL, Romania introduced a temporary ban on imports of agricultural products from Ukraine. It will be valid until June 5.
