Biden warned Putin three years ago what would happen if Navalny died in prison

Back in 2021, U.S. President Joe Biden warned Russian dictator Vladimir Putin of the catastrophic consequences for Russia if Navalny died in prison. This happened after the Russian opposition leader went on a hunger strike in protest after the colony's management refused to provide him with access to proper medical care.

This statement by Biden three years ago is being recalled by the world media on February 16, the day of Alexei Navalny's death.

The US president then emphasized that Navalny's death in custody would be a tragedy and would harm Russia's relations with the United States and the rest of the world. It would be another indication that Russia has no intention of respecting fundamental human rights.

"I made it clear to him that I believe the consequences of this would be devastating for Russia. It would be a tragedy. It would bring nothing but deterioration of relations with the whole world and with me," Biden said at the time.

The American leader warned the Kremlin dictator about the possible consequences for his regime on June 16, 2021, in Geneva after a bilateral meeting with Putin.

"I told him that no U.S. president can maintain the trust of the American people if he does not defend our democratic values. That is why we will stand in support of Alexei Navalny," Joe Biden said at the time.

Following Biden's strong statements, Putin denied suggestions that he might have been involved in the assassination attempt on Navalny. This refers to the poisoning of the Russian oppositionist on an airplane in 2020.

"We do not have such a custom of killing anyone. The person you mentioned (Navalny - Ed.) will be treated no worse than anyone else who is in prison," Putin cynically assured at the time.
