Swedish Foreign Minister: We must prepare for a long-term confrontation with Russia
Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström has warned that the aggressor country Russia will remain a serious threat to the security of all European states in the future. He urged Europe to be prepared for a long confrontation with Moscow.
Dagens Nyheter quoted the minister as saying this on Sunday, January 7. He recalled Russia's violations of international law.
"We must prepare for a long-term confrontation that will last as long as Russia violates the UN Charter and the European security order," the official said.
He assured that Sweden's military and political support for Ukraine would continue. Billström also said that the country fully supports the EU's decision to start membership negotiations with Ukraine.
The Swedish Foreign Minister emphasized that the heroic soldiers of the Ukrainian Defense Forces are fighting for the freedom not only of their country, but also for "European freedom and values."
The minister added that Sweden should be active not only in defense and security around the NATO-Russia border, but also, for example, around Europe's southern border and in the Arctic.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, in December, Sweden approved a winter military aid package for Ukraine in the amount of 124 million euros. The funds will be used for civilian infrastructure. They reminded that Ukraine is fighting not only for its survival, but also for the security and freedom of Europe.
