What is the threat to Zaporizhzhya NPP from the explosion of the Kakhovka HPP and whether a nuclear accident is possible: "Energoatom" statement

Enerhoatom said that the undermining of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant by the Russian occupants jeopardizes the safe operation of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant. The water level in the Kakhovka reservoir, which is used for cooling the plant's reactors, is rapidly decreasing.

The situation is now under control, but the threat to ZNPP remains. Energoatom told about the situation on the morning of June 6.

"On the night of June 6, 2023, Russian occupants blew up the dam of the Kakhovka HPP. As a result of the detonation, the water level in the Kakhovka reservoir is rapidly decreasing, which is an additional threat to the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP. Water from the Kakhovka reservoir is needed for the Zaporizhzhia NPP plant to be safe. Now the station cooling pond is full: as of 8:00 a.m., the water level is 16.6 meters, and this is enough for the needs of the plant," Energoatom noted.

They also added that the Ukrainian personnel at ZNPP monitors all indicators and that the situation at the plant is under control.

The news is being supplemented.
