Ukraine is developing AI systems for drones: how it will change the situation on the frontline

Ukraine is developing artificial intelligence (AI) systems that will help control a large number of drones, which will allow us to move combat operations to areas where our defense forces seek to gain a technological advantage in combat. Several startups are currently engaged in these developments, Reuters reports.

Ukraine hopes that the deployment of AI-powered drones on the front line will help it overcome the increasing signal jamming by the Russians.

It should also allow Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles to operate in larger groups.

The development of AI drones in Ukraine is divided into:

- visual systems that help identify targets and adjust drone route;

- terrain mapping for navigation;

- more complex programs that allow UAVs to operate in interconnected swarms.

In particular, Swarmer is working on this, developing software that connects drones into a network. The solutions can be implemented instantly by the entire group of UAVs, with a human intervening only to give the green light for automatic strikes.

While human pilots struggle to manage operations with more than five drones, artificial intelligence can handle hundreds of drones.

In addition to expanding operations, automation will help protect drone pilots who operate near the front line and are a priority target for enemy fire, says Swarmer CEO Serhiy Kupriienko.

He added that Swarmer's technology is still under development and has only been experimentally tested on the battlefield.

Another system, called Styx, will allow for the control of a network of reconnaissance and attack drones, both large and small, in the air and on the ground. Each drone will be able to plan its own actions and predict the behavior of others in the swarm.

As reported, Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle operators are improving their ability to block Russian long-range drones in the air. Such technological innovations could allow the Armed Forces to ease pressure on short- and medium-range air defense systems if successfully deployed on a large scale.
