"This is a problem of human lives, not finances": Borrell criticizes Hungary for blocking €5bn aid to Ukraine

The European Union is currently considering seven legal acts, the adoption of which is necessary to provide Ukraine with €5 billion in military aid. In order to approve them, unanimity is required, which cannot be achieved because of Hungary's position.

This was stated by High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell at a briefing following the EU Council of Ministers on May 27, Ukrinform reports. He emphasized that this delay is measured in human lives.

"These are seven legal texts that will mobilize resources to provide military support to Ukraine. Everyone says we are not fulfilling our obligations, we are not doing it on time. I have seven legal documents waiting to be adopted to mobilize about €5 billion in military support for Ukraine. This delay is measured in human lives. It is not a financial problem, it is a problem of human lives," Borrell emphasized.

He noted that there is an agreement that no Hungarian contributions to the European Peace Fund will be used for military assistance to Ukraine. At the same time, decisions on the use of this fund should be made by consensus.

Borrell emphasized that any EU member may have reasons to disagree with something. However, according to the top diplomat, there should be a proportionality between such concerns and the weight of issues that cannot be addressed by other participants in the process as a result of such a position.

The head of European diplomacy emphasized that Ukraine needs weapons now, "not next year."

"We already have a long delay, which has a specific reason: the lack of agreement among member states, in particular with one of them, where consensus must be reached," Borrell added.
