The Romanian government has approved a bill that provides for the transfer of the Patriot air defense missile system to Ukraine. The document was sent to the parliament for a final vote.

In case of a positive decision, Bucharest will transfer one of its two Patriot missile defense systems to Kyiv. This was reported by Reuters.

The government approved a draft law allowing the transfer of the Patriot missile defense system to Ukraine on September 2. Now the final decision must be made by the Parliament.

It is worth noting that in June 2024, the Romanian authorities announced that they were ready to transfer one of the two Patriot missile defense systems operating in the country to Ukraine under one condition. Bucharest hopes to receive a similar air defense system from its allies.

"After the parliament approves the law, the government will be able to make a decision that will make the donation valid," said government spokesman Mihai Constantin.

In addition, the bill also states that Romania will send letters to the United States with a proposal to replace the Patriot battery and expects to pay about $60 million in taxes and fees.

As a reminder, Romania's National Defense Council, headed by President Klaus Iohannis, decided to transfer one Patriot system to Ukraine on June 20. The decision was made after the Ministry of Defense presented an analysis of the status, use, and importance of Patriot systems for national and collective defense and how the transfer of one system to Ukraine could change the situation.

Earlier, the White House suspended all open orders for Patriot systems and missiles to redirect supplies to Ukraine.
