Preparations for the counter-offensive continue: Spain's Leopard 2 tanks are to be delivered to Ukraine

In the coming days, Spain will deliver six of the ten promised Leopard 2A4 tanks to Ukraine. After that, a second aid package will be delivered, which will include four more units of this armoured vehicle.

This was announced by Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares, Tagesschau reports. The official assured that the country would support Ukraine in the war against Russia as long as necessary.

"This includes humanitarian aid, refugee reception and the supply of defensive weapons," the minister said.

Over the past few weeks, 55 Ukrainians have been trained as crew and technicians on the main Leopard battle tanks in Spain. In total, the country has 347 Leopard tanks, 108 of which are the older 2A4 and 239 are the newer 2A6, known in Spain as the 2E. However, Spain is not yet willing to transfer any of the newer and more powerful tanks to Ukraine, as it is keeping them for its own national defence.

Earlier, Spanish Defence Minister Margarita Robles said that six Leopard 2A tanks would be sent to the frontline in Ukraine by the end of April. The country is already completing the relevant preparations.

According to Robles, the tanks will be shipped by sea along with 20 Caterpillar Transport armoured personnel carriers. In addition, Spain is already repairing four more Leopard tanks.

- The Ukrainian Armed Forces will receive an additional 14 Leopard 2 tanks from the Netherlands and Denmark. According to Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, the transfer of tanks is "a major donation in a joint project with the Netherlands."

- Ukraine's Defence Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said that the Ukrainian army could launch a counter-offensive in April-May 2023. According to him, the counterattack, in which Ukrainian soldiers will use Leopard battle tanks, is planned in several directions.
