In the Kherson region, the occupiers tortured LGBTQ representatives: new data on new crimes of the Russian Federation surfaced

During the occupation of the Kherson region, Russian invaders repeatedly imprisoned, tortured, and sexually abused LGBTQ people. Moreover, such persons were detained precisely because of their orientation and gender identification.

This is stated in a report by the social organization "Prozhektor." The document cites eight cases committed by the occupiers in the Kherson region during the occupation but indicates that the project's lawyers interviewed 107 representatives of the LGBTQ community who suffered or witnessed war crimes by the Russian military during the occupation of the city of Kherson.

The actions of the Russians can be considered not only war crimes but also crimes against humanity, as it is a case of gender-based persecution, human rights activists say. According to them, Ukrainians were subjected to violence by the occupiers precisely because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

The social organization says that LGBTQ survivors of Russian crimes did not turn to Ukrainian law enforcement agencies because of "distrust of the system." At the same time, the prosecutor's office stated that they have received relevant appeals, but consider them in conjunction with others. Prosecutors explain that "under martial law, crimes against LGBTQ people are not separated from other crimes and are considered on a general basis."
