Zelenskyy plans to meet with Trump after his inauguration

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy plans to meet with the newly elected US President after the latter's inauguration on January 20. According to the head of state, Trump assured him that this meeting would be one of the first he would hold as president.

Zelenskyy expects that the meeting with his American counterpart will mark the beginning of joint work with partners to end the hot stage of the Russian-Ukrainian war. He said this in his first interview in 2025, which the President and First Lady Olena Zelenska gave to United News: it was broadcast during a telethon on January 2.

According to Zelenskyy, the reason for his hopes for a close meeting with Trump was the latter's promise.

"Trump told me when we spoke on the phone: "One of the first visits I will expect is from you." He said: "For me, the priority is to end the war, and I will do it." So I think we will have a meeting after the inauguration," the Ukrainian president said.

He also expressed hope that after the inauguration of the US President, the states would start working together on steps to stop the hot stage of the war.

"The war will not end in one day. The hot stage of the war can end quite quickly if Trump is strong in his position. And it is desirable, in my opinion, that this position coincides with our European colleagues, because today we are receiving assistance from Europe, and with delays from the United States last year, I will say frankly, it was about the same. And for us, this is a serious support – the European Union and European countries, in particular Britain, are our constant partners," Zelenskyy emphasized.

The Head of State added that during the election campaign, Trump had prioritized domestic issues in the United States. At the same time, in foreign policy, the new White House administration will pay special attention to events in the Middle East and Ukraine.

Earlier, Zelenskyy listed the components of a "just peace" for Ukraine. First of all, he said, our country needs real security guarantees. After all, only they will prevent Russian dictator Vladimir Putin from returning to Ukrainian soil with war.
