President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on the leader of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) Friedrich Merz to increase support for Ukraine in the war against Russia. In a conversation with the CDU leader, the Head of State raised the topic of inviting Ukraine to NATO and providing long-range missiles.

This was reported by AFP. Zelenskyy's meeting with Merz took place in Kyiv on Monday, December 9.

Friedrich Merz may replace Olaf Scholz as German Chancellor after the February 2025 elections. The President of Ukraine addressed him as a possible head of the government.

"We are counting on stronger, more decisive actions from Germany, from you personally. We are counting on it," Zelenskyy emphasized.

For his part, Merz confirmed his readiness to provide Ukraine with German long-range Taurus missiles if he comes to power in Germany. He emphasized that his position on this remains unchanged.

"President Zelenskyy knows our position on Taurus missiles... As of today, in early December 2024, it has not changed," the politician said.

He criticized Scholz's policy, which, in his opinion, forces Ukraine to fight with its hands tied.

"Our position is clear, as is the position of our parliamentary faction. We want your army to be able to hit military bases in Russia. Not civilians, not infrastructure, but military targets from which your country is being attacked," Merz said.

The CDU leader also noted that the end of the war is possible only if Ukraine can effectively defend itself, emphasizing: "Putin will only negotiate when he realizes that Ukraine is strong."

During the meeting, Zelenskyy also said that he plans to call US President Joe Biden in the near future to discuss inviting Ukraine to join NATO.

"Because he is now the current president of the United States, and a lot depends on his position," the head of state explained.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, during his visit to Kyiv, Friedrich Merz proposed to create a contact group to form a common position on ending the war in Ukraine. According to the politician, it should include four NATO countries: Germany, France, Poland, and the United Kingdom.
