Ukraine is ready to sign an agreement on minerals, and relations with Trump will continue: Zelenskyy's main statements during a conversation with the British media
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine is ready to sign a minerals agreement with the United States and added that relations with Donald Trump will continue. As for ending the war in Ukraine, the agreement is still "far away" and no real steps have been taken in this direction.
The head of state said this during a conversation with journalists at the London airport. OBOZ.UA summarized the main points of the President's statements.
On relations with Trump
Zelenskyy said he believes he can save his relationship with US President Donald Trump after their explosive meeting in the Oval Office. At the same time, he emphasized that negotiations should continue behind closed doors.
"As for the preservation of relations, I think our relations will persist. I don't believe it's right when such discussions are entirely open... The way things unfolded, I don't think it provided us with anything positive or extra as partners," said the politician.
Zelenskyy added that he is still ready to sign the proposed minerals agreement with the United States and that he believes the United States will be ready as well.
On the agreement to end the war
The President emphasized that an agreement to end the war is still "very, very far away." According to him, "no real steps have been taken in this direction" and Ukraine is not going to give up its territories, despite certain signals from its partners, including the United States.
"Today we are talking about the first steps and until they are on paper I would not like to talk about them in detail. The agreement on ending the war is still very, very far away. No one has started any steps. Peace must be just, fair, and sustainable. And it must have very specific security guarantees and specific bearers of these guarantees. With specific responsibility for the presence, if any, at sea, on land, and in the sky. We are not talking about concessions, because this would be the wrong conversation. We hear signals from the United States, but everyone must understand: Ukraine will never recognize the occupied territories as Russian," Zelenskyy said.
On his resignation
"I can be exchanged for NATO. I said I would exchange for NATO membership, so I have fulfilled my mission," the president said.
He emphasized that it would be difficult to replace him: "It is not enough to hold elections. You have to prevent me from participating. And this will be a little more difficult. Because you still have to negotiate with me."
On helping Ukraine
Zelenskyy said that Kyiv appreciates the help of its partners and that support for Ukraine does not depend on individual political moments.
"The support will continue because Ukraine's failure is not just Putin's gain, but Europe and the United States' failure. We are all interested in preventing his victory," the head of state said.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, a summit of European leaders was held in London on March 2, dedicated to the security system on the continent and future security guarantees for Ukraine. At the meeting, EU leaders discussed the establishment of a just and sustainable peace in Ukraine.
The leaders agreed on several important steps to support Ukraine. Among the key decisions were the continuation of military aid to Ukraine and increased economic pressure on Russia.
Kier Starmer noted that any new agreement must be backed by force to ensure an effective outcome.
