Ukraine and Ukrainians deserve full membership in the European Union "both for their defense of European values and for the fact that even during a full-scale war we keep our word by developing state institutions." This was stated by President Volodymyr Zelensky in response to the European Commission's recommendation to start negotiations on Ukraine's membership in the EU.

The President recorded a special video message on Wednesday, November 8. The video was posted on Zelensky's Telegram channel and other social media accounts (to watch the video, scroll to the bottom of the page).

The Ukrainian president said that today the history of Ukraine and the whole of Europe has made the right step.

"Our country should be in the European Union. Ukrainians deserve it... We are making all the necessary decisions," the president wrote.

President's address

A political decision of the European Council is expected in December 2023, he said, and emphasized that Ukrainians have always been part of our common European family.

At the end of the address, the guarantor thanked "everyone who helps" and traditionally said: "Glory to Ukraine!".

As OBOZ.UA previously reported:

- On November 8, the European Commission recommended starting negotiations on Ukraine's membership in the EU. The process is expected to be launched at the end of March 2024. There will be no accelerated accession procedure, our country will need to ensure development in some areas.

- The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that Kyiv has already implemented 90% of the reforms expected by the EU.
