No negotiations will bring any lasting peace until Putin gives up his demands for Ukraine - ISW

The Kremlin has responded to US President-elect Donald Trump's statement that he is preparing to meet with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. It said that Russia is allegedly ready for talks "without preconditions" while recalling its unchanging demands regarding Ukraine.

This is stated in the article of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). Analysts are confident that no negotiations will lead to a lasting peace until Putin gives up his claims.

On January 10, the Russian dictator's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, made a statement regarding the negotiations between Russia and the United States to end the Russian-Ukrainian war. Commenting on Trump's words about organizing a meeting with Putin, Peskov said that the Russian dictator is "open" to contacts with international leaders and that "no conditions are needed for this."

At the same time, Peskov reiterated Putin's demands to Ukraine. According to him, the Kremlin maintains its "repeatedly voiced" position, which the head of the aggressor state formulated in June 2024 and reiterated during the Direct Line in December.

Thus, the Kremlin demanded the removal of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the current Ukrainian government, calling it "denazification." Putin also demands the disarmament of the Ukrainian army and a sharp and significant reduction in the number of personnel in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In addition, Moscow wants Kyiv to give up significant territories in the east and south, including those that have been de-occupied and those where the Russian occupier's boots have never set foot. These demands were interpreted by ISW as "Ukraine's full capitulation," and thus make it impossible to end the war.

"No negotiations will result in a meaningful or sustainable peace as long as Putin remains committed to these demands -- regardless of the Kremlin's "willingness" to hold talks with Western leaders," the analysts summarized.

Earlier, ISW reported that the Ukrainian Armed Forces counterattacked the enemy near Berdin and Kruglenkoye in Kursk region. Russian troops also managed to achieve some minor success. However, most of their victories, which were reported by Russian propagandists, remained only in Telegram channels
